최근 대한민국 국회의 모습을 보면서 정치인들에게 유머가 상당히 부족하다는 생각이 들었습니다.
유머는 단순히 분위기를 가볍게 만드는 것이 아닙니다. 상대방을 이해시키고 설득하며, 서로의 생각 사이에 공간을 만들어주는 능력입니다.
정치는 공동체의 문제를 다루는 고도의 기술입니다. 그렇기 때문에 정치인은 뚜렷한 신념을 가지고 있어야 하지만, 동시에 자신의 생각을 절대화하지 않을 여유도 필요합니다.
정책과 토론의 목적이 자신의 승리에만 있다면 상대방의 의견이 들어올 자리는 없습니다. 그러나 정치가 개인의 승리가 아니라 대의(大義)를 향한다면, 상대방의 의견을 받아들일 여유가 생깁니다.
저는 그 여유에서 유머가 나온다고 생각합니다.
유머가 없다는 것이 반드시 신념이 없다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 그러나 자신의 신념을 바라볼 수 있는 여유가 완전히 사라진 정치는 결국 독불장군식 정치가 될 수 있습니다.
그렇게 되면 국회는 공동체의 미래를 논의하는 곳이 아니라, 초등학교 학급위원회와 다를 바 없는 자리다툼의 공간이 될지도 모릅니다.
에드먼드 버크는 정당을 “공동의 원칙에 동의하고 국가의 이익을 증진하기 위해 연합한 사람들의 집단”으로 보았습니다.
정치에는 신념이 필요합니다.
그러나 신념만으로는 부족합니다.
공동체를 향한 대의와, 상대방을 받아들일 수 있는 여유가 필요합니다.
어쩌면 좋은 정치인은 가장 강한 신념을 가진 사람이 아니라, 가장 강한 신념을 가지고도 웃을 수 있는 사람인지도 모르겠습니다.
Why Does Politics Need Humor?
Recently, as I watched the proceedings of the National Assembly of South Korea, I was struck by how little humor there seems to be among politicians.
Humor is not simply a way to make an atmosphere lighter. It is a powerful means of helping others understand and persuading them, while creating space between different perspectives.
Politics is a sophisticated art of dealing with the problems of a community. Politicians therefore need firm convictions, but they also need enough humility and distance not to regard their own views as absolute.
If the purpose of political debate is simply to win, there is no room left for the other side’s ideas. But when politics is directed toward a greater cause, there is room to listen to and accept another person’s perspective.
I believe humor comes from that room.
The absence of humor does not necessarily mean the absence of conviction. But when politics completely loses the ability to step back and look at its own convictions, it can easily become a politics of stubbornness.
When that happens, the National Assembly may begin to resemble less a place where the future of a community is discussed and more a school classroom where children argue over who gets to be class president.
Edmund Burke understood a political party as a group of people united by a common principle to promote the national interest.
Politics needs conviction.
But conviction alone is not enough.
It also needs a greater cause and the humility to make room for others.
Perhaps a good politician is not simply someone with the strongest convictions, but someone who can still smile while holding firmly to them.
