The Child Who Follows Us Around

I went grocery shopping with my children. Taking both children to the supermarket is not easy, so my wife usually goes by herself. But today, for some reason, I felt like going with her.

As we left the house, I thought to myself:

This is going to be a war at the supermarket.

When I remembered our previous trips, I could only picture my first child running through the aisles as if the supermarket were a racetrack, darting between the shelves without a care in the world.

And so, we arrived at the supermarket.

My wife began shopping with our second child, who still cannot walk, while I prepared myself to keep a close eye on our first.

Sure enough, our child grabbed a small shopping basket for children and immediately started running into the supermarket.

Ah, so the war is starting already.

I barely had time to blame myself for letting my guard down before I started chasing after the child.

But then something unexpected happened.

Instead of running aimlessly around the supermarket as I had expected, my child ran toward their mother, who was doing the shopping.

As their mother pushed the shopping cart from one aisle to another, our child followed alongside her and began choosing things they wanted to eat and putting them into the cart.

It was a completely different child from the one I remembered.

Watching this, I suddenly thought:

My child has grown so much.

Not long ago, they simply chased after whatever caught their attention. Now, they are beginning to understand the space around them and have learned how to follow another person within it.

Perhaps this is another way a child learns to understand the world.

A supermarket is different from a park. Every item on the shelves has a price, and we have to pay for the things we want. People share the same space while trying not to get in each other’s way.

My child does not understand all these rules yet.

But by following their mother and finding a yogurt they want to eat and placing it in the shopping cart, they are slowly learning about the world.

They did not stay beside their mother throughout the entire shopping trip.

Still, watching my child follow her around and place the things they liked into the cart felt especially precious today.

Little by little, my child is learning how to live in this world on their own.

And as I follow along, I am discovering, one
