다가오는 2026년 지방선거는 여러 지역에서 중요한 전환점이 될 가능성이 있습니다. 그러나 그 전환을 완성하는 주체는 정치인이 아니라 시민입니다. 이러한 점에서 대구는 여전히 보수의 도시입니다. 단지 변하지 않는 도시가 아니라, 신중함 속에서 변화를 준비하는 도시이기 때문입니다.

Daegu is a city that embodies both prudence and decisiveness. In the realm of party politics, it has shown a consistent pattern of support, shaped over time by accumulated political experience and cultural habits. This should not be mistaken for blind loyalty. Rather than unconditional obedience to a particular figure or group, it reflects a voluntary choice formed through long-standing political and social experience.
Yet today, even Daegu—often regarded as the heart of conservatism—is experiencing winds of change. This is not a superficial curiosity, like a child fascinated by a new toy. Instead, it is a cautious and deliberate interest in alternatives that may have a real impact on people’s lives.
I felt this shift during a recent visit to Daegu. On my way to my accommodation in a taxi, the driver made a remark that has stayed with me: “We supported them that much—then they should have done better… Now it’s time for change.”
His words did not express mere dissatisfaction, but rather a sense of judgment and responsibility formed over time. The political attitude of Daegu’s citizens is far from impulsive. They do not abandon their choices after a few mistakes. Instead, they tend to wait for a viable alternative, weighing it carefully before making a decision.
However, the time has come for that prudence to evolve into something more. It must move beyond observation and contribute to the shaping of a better political and social order. Of course, politicians alone cannot build a civilized society. At best, they can open the door to a transitional moment.
True change begins with free citizens. Even transforming one’s own family is no easy task. To influence others, legitimacy alone is not enough. It requires understanding and care—indeed, a form of love.
The upcoming 2026 local elections may become a turning point in many regions. Yet it is important to remember that such turning points are not completed by politicians, but by citizens themselves. In this sense, Daegu remains a conservative city—not because it refuses to change, but because it prepares for change with prudence and responsibility.
