What Does It Mean to Mature?

(Seong-suk / Maturity)

  • 成: to accomplish, to become, to complete
  • 熟: to ripen, to become fully developed, to become accustomed to

Taken literally, the word suggests “becoming complete and fully ripened,” or “gradually ripening through time.”

There is something especially interesting about the character 熟.

Just as fruit or grain ripens over time, people and societies can also become more mature through time and experience.

But does maturity simply mean getting older?

Time is given to everyone equally.

No one can escape the passage of time. Just as a fish cannot live outside water, human beings exist within the limits imposed by time.

Yet having the same amount of time does not mean reaching the same level of maturity.

This is where experience becomes important.

Experience is made up of the events that take place throughout our lives.

Whether we intend them or not, we encounter various influences from both the world around us and within ourselves. As we interpret and judge these experiences, we gradually develop our own values.

This is why experience makes people different.

Even when people live in the same period, they have different experiences. And even when they go through the same experience, they may interpret it in completely different ways.

In the end, maturity may depend not simply on how long we have lived, but on how we have received our experiences and what we have learned from them.

This leads us to an interesting question: What is the difference between growing older and becoming mature?

And beyond that: What could be the standard by which we understand a person’s maturity?

Time is given to everyone.

But how we live through that time is our own responsibility.

Perhaps maturity is the process of turning the time we are given into experience, experience into judgment, and judgment into practice in our own lives.
