Watching My Second Child Grow
My second child has pulled himself up by holding onto the window ledge. My wife captured this fleeting moment in a photograph and sent it to me. Soon afterward, she sent another photo: a tiny white lower tooth emerging from his pink gums.
Unlike when we raised our first child, caring for our second feels a little easier. Perhaps some of the unnecessary worries and expectations I once carried as a parent have gradually faded. Things that once felt unfamiliar have become routine, and there are fewer moments when I feel lost, unsure of what to do.
Because of this, I thought I might not pay as much attention to my second child’s growth as I had to my first.
But the moment I saw the photographs my wife had sent, something within me told me I was wrong.
The joy I felt watching my second child grow was no different from what I had felt with my first. Everything about my child fills me with affection, and even the smallest changes move my heart. Becoming more experienced at parenting had not made my love any less tender.
Perhaps there are things we can understand only after becoming parents. Familiarity makes our actions less awkward, but it does not diminish the reasons we have to love.
As my second child grows, so does my first. Both children are experiencing changes in their bodies, minds, and emotions for the very first time. What may seem like a familiar part of life to an adult is, for a child, a first encounter with a world waiting to be discovered.
Perhaps, then, a parent’s role is not to lead a child through every stage of growth or urge them to move faster. It is to care for them with love, allow them to grow at their own pace, and share in the joy of each new discovery.
Today, both of my children are growing.
And I, too, am gradually learning what it means to be a parent who loves them.
