어떤 영역에서든 통하는 원리는 비슷한 것 같습니다.
자신을 가꾸는 일이든, 회사든, 비영리단체든 각 영역에는 그에 필요한 덕목이 있습니다. 그리고 그 덕목을 실제 행동으로 옮긴다면, 적어도 조직이나 사회가 쉽게 퇴행하는 것을 막을 수 있을 것입니다.
한번 생각해보겠습니다.
여러분은 회사에서 주어진 업무를 하고 있습니다. 그 업무에는 혼자 할 수 없는 팀 활동이 포함되어 있습니다.
사실 인간사회에서 완전히 혼자 할 수 있는 일은 거의 없습니다.
그 안에는 마음에 드는 동료도 있고, 의견 충돌이 잦은 사람도 있습니다. 서로 다른 이해관계와 성격 때문에 팀 안의 긴장은 언제나 존재합니다.
어느 회사든 이런 상황을 관리해야 하는 사람이 있습니다.
그렇다면 관리자는 어떤 덕목을 가져야 할까요?
원활한 커뮤니케이션 능력일까요?
좋은 복지제도를 만드는 능력일까요?
아니면 어려운 상황을 견디는 힘일까요?
저 역시 비슷한 상황을 경험하고 있습니다.
그런데 요즘 제가 중요하다고 느끼는 덕목은 “상황을 긍정적인 방향으로 이끌어가는 힘”입니다.
인간은 아름다움에 반응합니다.
그리고 아름다움을 발견할 때 우리는 즐거움을 느낍니다. 중요한 것은 상황 자체만이 아니라 그 상황을 어떻게 바라보고 해석하느냐입니다.
같은 상황에서도 무엇을 발견하고 어떤 의미를 부여하느냐에 따라 우리가 경험하는 세계는 달라질 수 있습니다.
그렇다면 관리자에게 필요한 것은 단순한 낙관주의가 아닙니다.
현재의 상황에서 무엇이 좋은 것인지 발견하고, 그것을 바탕으로 사람들을 더 나은 방향으로 이끌 수 있는 판단력입니다.
저는 이것이 정치인에게는 더욱 중요한 덕목이라고 생각합니다.
기업조차 사적 이익을 추구하면서 조직을 유지하기 위해 이러한 덕목을 필요로 합니다.
그렇다면 공적 이익을 다루는 정치인은 어떨까요?
시민들 사이의 갈등을 이용하고, 단순히 복지를 확대하거나, 자신의 신념을 끝까지 관철하는 것만을 정치인의 덕목이라고 한다면 우리는 어떤 사회를 만들게 될까요?
정치인에게 필요한 것은 자신의 생각을 관철하는 힘만은 아닐 것입니다.
주어진 상황에서 더 나은 가능성을 발견하고, 사람들을 그 방향으로 움직이게 하는 힘.
저는 이것을 “아름다움을 발견하는 능력”이라고 부르고 싶습니다.
어쩌면 오늘날 정치가들에게 필요한 덕목은 바로 이것인지도 모릅니다.
상황을 더 아름다운 방향으로 이끌어가는 판단력.
What Virtues Do Politicians Need Today?
The same principles seem to apply across many areas of life.
Whether we are developing ourselves, managing a company, or running a nonprofit organization, each field requires certain virtues. If we put those virtues into practice, we may at least prevent ourselves and our organizations from moving backward.
Let’s think about this for a moment.
Imagine that you are working at a company. Your work is part of a team, because there are many things we cannot accomplish alone.
In fact, very little in human society can be done entirely by ourselves.
There may be colleagues you like and others with whom you frequently disagree. Different interests and personalities naturally create tensions within a team.
Every company has someone who must manage these situations.
So what virtues does a manager need?
Good communication skills?
The ability to create better working conditions?
Or perhaps the strength to endure difficult situations?
I am experiencing a similar situation myself.
Recently, I have come to think that one important virtue is “the ability to lead a situation in a positive direction.”
Human beings respond to beauty.
When we discover beauty, we experience pleasure. What matters is not only the situation itself, but also how we see and interpret that situation.
Even in the same circumstances, the world we experience can change depending on what we discover and what meaning we give to it.
What a manager needs, therefore, is not simply optimism.
It is the judgment to discover what is good within a given situation and to use it to lead people toward something better.
I believe this virtue is even more important for politicians.
Even businesses, which pursue private interests, need such virtues in order to maintain their organizations.
What, then, about politicians who deal with the public interest?
If a politician’s virtues are simply the ability to exploit divisions among citizens, expand welfare programs, or insist on pursuing personal convictions to the very end, what kind of society will we create?
What politicians need is not simply the power to impose their ideas.
It is the ability to discover better possibilities within a given situation and move people in that direction.
I would call this “the ability to discover beauty.”
