Learning to Swim in the Waters of Life
I remember having a strange experience when I was learning to swim.
I would try to float, but I would sink. Then, when I wanted to sink, my body would somehow float back to the surface. It was my own body, yet there were moments when it felt almost like someone else’s body—something that would not move according to my intentions.
Looking back, I wonder why that happened.
Perhaps fear and tension had taken hold of my mind. Thoughts about the water occupied my attention, and I became so focused on desperately trying not to sink that I could no longer move my body naturally.
Life can be much the same.
At every moment, countless thoughts compete for our attention and take hold of our hearts.
And yet, we tend to believe that we can control our lives through our own plans and ability to carry them out. We make plans, work hard, and assume that we can move our lives in the direction we want.
But swimming teaches us something very simple:
Even our own bodies do not always move according to our will.
Life is not so different.
Unexpected things happen. We encounter circumstances beyond our control. Sometimes, even our own hearts refuse to move in the direction we want them to.
When fear, desire, anxiety, and worry take hold of us, we may know what we ought to do and yet find ourselves unable to do it.
Perhaps this is why the Word of God does not necessarily remove all the unexpected things from our lives. Instead, it cultivates within us the basic ability to keep moving forward in the midst of them.
When someone teaches us how to swim, we learn how to float, how to breathe, and how to move our bodies through the water.
These are not extraordinary skills.
They are basic abilities needed to live in the water.
Perhaps the Word of God is like that.
Recently, I have been memorizing one verse of Scripture each day, and it has led me to think about this differently.
Memorizing Scripture is not simply a discipline for measuring how many years we have accumulated in our faith. It feels more like learning, one piece at a time, the basic abilities we need to live.
In a world filled with distractions and deception,
we need to know what to believe.
When fear comes, we need to know what to hold on to.
When our hearts are shaken, we need to know where to turn our eyes.
The Word becomes a foundation that helps us find our direction again.
Perhaps memorizing Scripture is not merely a practice for becoming better at religious life.
Perhaps it is learning how to swim so that we can stay alive in the water.
We cannot control the water. But we can learn how to move within it.
Life is the same.
We cannot control everything that happens to us, but we can learn how to live within what happens.
And I am learning those basic ways of living through the Word of God.
