오늘의 보수는 다시 시민에게로 돌아가야 합니다. 정부의 힘에 기대지 않고도 질서를 유지할 수 있는 성숙한 사회, 그리고 타인을 존중하며 절제된 자유를 실천하는 품격의 공동체를 만들어야 합니다. 그것이야말로 진정한 의미의 보수이며, 우리가 다음 세대에 물려주어야 할 정신입니다.
The Contradiction of Conservatism That Seeks a Big Government
Those who call themselves conservatives today often speak of “small government,” yet in practice they pursue a path of “big government.” This is a clear contradiction to the essence of conservatism. True conservatism does not seek to expand power for the sake of control, but rather to restrain it in order to honor the organic order of a self-governing community. However, modern conservatism remains trapped in a state-centered mindset, justifying power through efficiency and order while relying heavily on bureaucratic convenience.
At its core, conservatism recognizes human imperfection and values stability and responsibility over reckless change. The state should not be an all-powerful actor, but a limited instrument that safeguards the order citizens have built for themselves. Yet today’s conservatives often cling to the illusion that government can solve every problem. Such dependence weakens civic autonomy and erodes the vitality of community life.
When conservatism tries to sustain society through state control, it becomes heavy and rigid. By contrast, a society led by responsible citizens is small yet strong, modest yet vibrant. What conservatism must protect is not the efficiency of authority but the dignity of its people. A society in which responsibility and self-restraint are lived out in everyday life represents the true stability that conservatism aspires to.
Conservatism must once again return to the citizens. We must build a mature society that can maintain order without dependence on state power—a community of dignity, where freedom is tempered by restraint and respect. That is the true conservatism we must preserve and pass on to the next generation.
