God’s Plan
When I read the Bible, I sometimes wonder whether many of the social and political problems we face today could be resolved, at least to some extent, if we lived according to God’s Word.
The Bible teaches us to consider others more important than ourselves. It also tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Yet, even when these moral principles are clearly presented to us, we often fail to put them into practice. We put our own interests first, struggle to understand other people’s perspectives, and sometimes make choices that harm the community as a whole.
If this is the reality of human nature, what role might the various academic disciplines developed by humanity play?
Political science examines the order that allows people to live together. Economics explores how limited resources can be used. Sociology studies how people form relationships and build communities.
These disciplines help us understand problems that good intentions alone cannot solve. They can also help us make better decisions.
Of course, knowledge does not always lead to good outcomes. It can be used to satisfy personal desires or to gain power over others. Ultimately, what matters is not simply how much we know, but how we choose to use that knowledge.
Perhaps the process through which human beings recognize their own weaknesses and develop knowledge and institutions to overcome them can also be understood within God’s providence.
If so, where should our pursuit of knowledge ultimately lead us?
It should not be limited to knowing more, working more efficiently, or accumulating greater wealth.
What if the ultimate purpose of knowledge were to help individuals grow, and for that personal growth to bring positive change to the wider community?
I believe this is one of the important reasons we should pursue knowledge.
We can put God’s Word into practice, use human reason and knowledge to understand our limitations, and apply what we learn for the good of our neighbors and communities.
Perhaps, through this entire process, we are gradually discovering something of God’s plan.
