저의 삶은 결코 평탄하지만은 않았습니다. 편안한 길을 선택할 수도 있었던 순간들이 있었지만, 망설임 없이 내 안의 본성을 따라 살아왔습니다. 일본 유학, 대학원 진학, 회사 생활, 국제결혼, 육아 등 인생의 큰 사건들은 베이컨이 말한 ‘아는 것이 힘이다’라는 이성의 명제만으로는 결코 시도할 수 없었던 경험들이었습니다. 그래서 점점 로크의 경험론이나 버크가 강조한 보수적 삶의 태도에 더 큰 매력을 느끼게 되었습니다. 인간의 삶에는 수많은 선택이 존재하지만, 각자에게 맞는 선택의 기준이 필요합니다. 절대적 선의 기준은 존재하지 않으며, 다만 그 선택이 개인의 내면적 감각과 조화를 이루는지가 중요합니다.
A Life Guided by Experience, Not Reason
My life has never been entirely smooth. There were moments when I could have chosen a more comfortable path, but I followed my inner nature without hesitation. Studying in Japan, entering graduate school, working in a company, an international marriage, and raising a child—these were all experiences I could never have attempted if I had followed only the rational maxim of Bacon’s “knowledge is power.” That is why I find Locke’s empiricism and Burke’s conservative attitude toward life far more appealing. Life offers countless choices, yet each person needs their own standard for making them. There is no absolute measure of goodness in human life—what matters is whether one’s choices align with the integrated sense of one’s inner self.
