May Every Day Be Like Chuseok

Korea is a nation with a long history. Although Chinese culture has influenced Korea, I believe Koreans have adapted and blended those influences to suit the peninsula’s unique geography, climate, and way of life.

Chuseok

When I think of Chuseok, the first memories that come to mind are of relatives gathering together, sitting close to one another, chatting, and sharing happy moments.

Looking back, I sometimes wonder how relatives once shared such a strong sense of closeness. It saddens me that these scenes have become increasingly difficult to find in today’s society.

My family was not perfect, and we did not always have everything we needed. Yet we looked after one another.

For someone like me, who has lived away from family for many years, those memories have become a treasure in my heart.

May Every Day Be Like Chuseok

The word Hangawi, another name for Chuseok, seems to awaken a special feeling in the hearts of Koreans. It carries a sense of nostalgia and tenderness, reminding us of family and times gone by.

The British philosopher Jeremy Bentham developed the philosophy of utilitarianism, which seeks the greatest happiness for the greatest number. In many areas of modern life, rationality and efficiency have become important values. At times, I wonder whether we have come to believe in these values almost as firmly as we believe in scripture.

Within this social atmosphere, the meaning of Chuseok also seems to be changing. Rather than being a time when families and communities come together to share their joy, has it become a time when people focus on their individual well-being—or even feel a greater sense of isolation?

I believe the true meaning of Hangawi lies in more than abundance itself.

It is found in asking one another how we are doing, sharing what we have, and finding joy in being together.

I hope that this spirit of shared, communal joy will come alive in our society once again.

May the days ahead, too, be filled with the warmth and joy of Chuseok.
