2026년 지방선거가 앞으로 한 달 남짓 다가왔습니다. 보수의 심장인 대구 시민들은 좀 더 나아진 미래를 기대하며 신중히 후보자들을 평가하고 있는 것 같습니다. 예전 같으면 고민 없이 지역 정당 출신 후보자를 지지했다면, 지금은 시민들의 정치적 판단에서 주저함이 느껴집니다.
정치적 행동에 있어서 주저함은 중요한 요소입니다. 왜냐하면 정치라는 영역은 인간 사회를 운영해 나가는 데 있어서 고도의 기술이 필요하기 때문입니다. 심지어 인간의 영역을 넘어선 초월적 힘의 개입도 있기 때문이죠. 그렇기 때문에 이번 대구시장 선거에는 시민들의 주저하는 행동이 보이는 것은 당연합니다.
제가 이 글을 쓰는 이유는 정치적 주저함, 즉 신중한 정치 판단을 하기 위한 몇 가지의 관점을 공유하여 종합적인 평가를 할 수 있게끔 하기 위함입니다. 특정 정당을 지지하지 않습니다. 단지 대구가 좀 더 나은 미래를 실제로 되찾기를 바랍니다.
첫째 질문은 사회란 무엇인가입니다. 단순한 개인들의 합인가, 아니면 개인들의 합을 초월한 공동체인가.
지방선거는 지역사회의 정치 리더를 선출하는 정치 행사입니다. 그 리더는 자신이 책임져야 할 지역에 관해 전제되는 사회관이 뚜렷해야 합니다. 사회가 단순한 개인들의 합이라고 생각한다면 개인들 간의 이익 조절을 중요시할 것입니다. 사회가 개인들의 합을 초월한 공동체라고 한다면 개인뿐만 아니라 다른 요소들도 고려할 것입니다.
둘째 질문은 얼마나 지역구에 애정을 가지고 있는가입니다.
인간 사회는 집을 짓고 관리해 나가는 것과는 비교할 수 없을 만큼 고려해야 할 요인이 많습니다. 가끔씩은 해결이 불가능해 보이는 문제들에 직면하기도 합니다. 그럴 때마다 그 문제들을 인내심을 가지고 관찰하고 대책을 세우기 위한 추진력은 지역구에 대한 애정(affection)입니다. 진심으로 문제를 해결하려는 마음(감정)은 신중하면서도 적절한 결단을 하게 합니다.
셋째 질문은 후보자들의 정책이 임기 안에 마무리될 수 있는 것들인가입니다.
인간 사회는 정치 사회보다 훨씬 오랜 기간 유지되어 왔습니다. 당선된 정치 지도자가 있기 전에도 대구시는 존재했으며, 임기 중에도, 임기가 끝난 이후에도 계속해서 발전해 나갑니다. 그러기에 임기 안에 복잡한 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 신중한 판단이 필요합니다. 영원함의 시간 속에서 단 몇 년이라는 임기에는 과거-현재-미래를 이어주는 개혁의 다리가 필요합니다.
보수의 심장 대구는 지금까지 맹목적으로 특정 정당을 밀어준 것이 아닙니다. 만약 그러한 대구 시민을 비난하는 사람이 있다면, 그 사람은 성급한 판단으로 경솔함을 드러낸 것뿐입니다. 정말로 비난해야 할 대상은 대구 시민이 믿고 지지하며 기다려준 지역 정당의 정치 리더들입니다.
우리는 우리의 방식으로 대구를 사랑해 왔고, 앞으로도 애정을 가질 것입니다. 그 애정이 단지 정치 세계에만 집중되지 않고 일상생활에서도 드러나, 자신과 가족, 그리고 속한 공동체를 키워나가는 것이야말로 진정한 대구의 변화라고 믿습니다. 그러기 위해서 눈앞에 닥친 지방선거부터 현명한 판단을 해야 할 것입니다.
With the 2026 local elections just over a month away, citizens of Daegu—the heart of conservatism—seem to be carefully evaluating the candidates in hopes of a better future. In the past, many would have supported candidates from their regional party without much hesitation. Today, however, there is a noticeable sense of hesitation in their political judgment.
Such hesitation in political action is an important element. Politics requires a high level of skill in governing human society, and at times it even involves factors that go beyond human understanding. For this reason, it is only natural that voters in this Daegu mayoral election show a degree of caution.
The purpose of this essay is to share several perspectives that may help guide such careful political judgment, enabling a more comprehensive evaluation. It does not support any particular political party. Rather, it simply hopes that Daegu may truly move toward a better future.
The first question is: What is society?
Is it merely a collection of individuals, or is it a community that transcends the sum of its parts?
Local elections are political events in which leaders of a community are chosen. Those leaders must have a clear understanding of the nature of the society for which they are responsible. If one views society as merely a collection of individuals, one will focus primarily on balancing competing interests. If one views society as a community that transcends individuals, one will consider not only individuals but also the broader relationships and structures that bind them together.
The second question is: How much affection does the candidate have for the region?
Human society is far more complex than building and maintaining a house. At times, it presents problems that seem impossible to solve. In such moments, the driving force that allows one to patiently observe and address these challenges is affection for the community. A sincere desire to solve problems—rooted in genuine care—leads to both prudence and sound decision-making.
The third question is: Are the candidate’s policies achievable within the term of office?
Human society has existed far longer than political systems. Daegu existed before any current political leader took office, and it will continue to develop both during and after their term. Therefore, it is essential to exercise prudence in proposing policies that can realistically be carried out within a limited timeframe. Within the short span of a term, what is needed is a bridge of reform that connects the past, present, and future.
Daegu, the heart of conservatism, has never blindly supported a particular political party. Anyone who criticizes its citizens in that way reveals only their own hasty and superficial judgment. The true subject of criticism should be the political leaders who failed to meet the trust and expectations of the citizens who supported and waited for them.
We have loved Daegu in our own way, and we will continue to do so. When that affection is not confined to politics but is expressed in our daily lives—through caring for ourselves, our families, and our communities—true change will take place. And to make that possible, we must begin with wise choices in the local elections now before us.
