우리는 흔히 고귀하고 숭고한 뜻만 세우면 세상이 변할 것이라 착각합니다. 불합리한 세상이 존재하는 이유는 그러한 뜻이 없기 때문이라고 생각하죠. 그래서 역사 속 고귀한 인물을 조명하며, 그의 사상과 업적을 통해 숭고한 정신을 되살리려 합니다.
하지만 숭고한 뜻만으로는 사회는 물론, 자신조차 변화시킬 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 숭고한 뜻은 언어의 세계에만 존재하기 때문입니다. 그 언어를 현실에 적용하기 위해서는 사람들의 연대가 필요합니다. 다양한 능력을 가진 사람들이 자발적으로 뜻을 따를 때, 비로소 자신과 사회에 변화가 일어납니다.
성경 느헤미야서 3장에는 하나님의 계시를 받은 느헤미야가 조국의 재건을 위해 동포들과 함께 예루살렘 성벽을 다시 세우는 장면이 나옵니다. 정말 다양한 사람들이 성전 구석구석을 중수합니다.
「옛 문은 바세아의 아들 요야다와 브소드야의 아들 므술람이 중수하여 그 들보를 얹고 문짝을 달고 자물쇠와 빗장을 갖추었고 그 다음은 기브온 사람 믈라댜와 메로놋 사람 야돈이 강 서편 총독의 관할에 속한 기브온 사람들과 미스바 사람들로 더불어 중수하였고」
느헤미야 3:6-7
그들은 함께 성벽을 재건해 나갑니다. 자발적이고 자유로운 행동이 모여 성벽을 더욱 튼튼하게 만듭니다.
오늘날 한국의 보수정당 역시 재건이 필요합니다. 그리고 그 재건은 고귀한 뜻만으로 이루어질 수 없습니다. 자발적이고 자유로운 시민들의 재능이 모일 때 비로소 진정한 재건이 시작됩니다. 그 일을 지금부터 준비해야 합니다.
When Rebuilding What Has Fallen, We Need the Talents of Many
We often believe that noble and lofty ideals alone can change the world. We assume that injustice exists simply because such ideals are absent. That’s why we highlight great figures in history, seeking to revive their noble spirit through their thoughts and achievements.
But noble ideals alone cannot change society—or even ourselves—because such ideals exist only in the realm of language. To bring those ideals into the material world, solidarity among people is essential. Only when individuals with diverse talents freely and voluntarily align themselves with a higher purpose can meaningful change begin.
In Nehemiah chapter 3, we see Nehemiah, who received a revelation from God, rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem alongside his fellow countrymen. A wide range of people come together, each restoring a different part of the wall.
“Moreover the old gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah; they laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon and Mizpah—Meltiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates.”
Nehemiah 3:6–7
Together they rebuilt the wall. Voluntary and free cooperation made it stronger.
Korea’s conservative movement also needs rebuilding. But this cannot be done by ideals alone. Only when free citizens come together, offering their skills and talents, can a true restoration take place. That work must begin now.
