“오직 그 땅을 제비 뽑아 나누어 그들의 조상 지파의 이름을 따라 얻게 할지니라.” (민수기 26장 55절)
앞으로 살 집을 제비뽑기로 결정한다는 것은, 내 집 마련조차 쉽지 않은 오늘날의 현실을 생각하면 납득하기 어려운 방식일지도 모릅니다. 인구를 세고 지파의 이름에 따라, 그리고 제비를 뽑아 땅을 분배한다는 일은 지금의 상식으로는 쉽게 이해되지 않습니다.
그렇다면 이스라엘 백성은 어떻게 이런 결정을 따를 수 있었을까요? 그것은 하나님의 주권에 대한 절대적인 믿음이 있었기 때문입니다. 하나님께서는 오랜 시간 동안 만나와 불기둥으로 그들의 일상을 지켜주셨고, 그들은 이를 매일 체험했습니다. 하나님의 돌보심을 날마다 경험한 그 믿음의 여정은, 결국 구원의 마지막 단계에서 놀라운 순종으로 이어졌습니다.
하나님의 주권을 인정하는 믿음은 단지 신비한 성령 체험만으로 생겨나지 않습니다. 일상 속에서 하나하나 하나님의 주권을 보고 느끼는 삶의 체험이 없다면, 하나님에 대한 굳건한 믿음도 세워지기 어렵습니다. 무엇보다도 우리에게는 예수 그리스도라는 구원을 향한 하나님의 순종의 결정체가 있습니다. 오늘도 그 영원한 기업 되신 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로, 하나님의 주권을 경험하는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다.
Faith That Trusts in God’s Sovereignty
“But the land shall be divided by lot; they shall receive their inheritance according to the names of their ancestral tribes.” (Numbers 26:55, ESV)
Deciding where to live by casting lots may sound unreasonable in today’s world, where even securing a home is a major challenge. Counting the population, assigning land by tribal name, and distributing it through drawing lots might seem incomprehensible by modern standards.
So how were the Israelites able to accept such a decision? It was because they had absolute faith in God’s sovereignty. God had protected and sustained them through the wilderness with manna and a pillar of fire. They experienced His care daily. These daily encounters with God’s providence laid the foundation for their final step of obedience in the journey of salvation.
Faith that acknowledges God’s sovereignty is not born from mystical spiritual experiences alone. Without daily encounters with God’s guiding hand in our ordinary lives, it is difficult to build unshakable faith. Above all, we have Jesus Christ—God’s ultimate act of obedient love for our salvation. Today, as we believe in Christ, our eternal inheritance, may we also experience God’s sovereign presence in every step we take.
