내 생각:
존 듀이는 학교와 사회의 관계가 유기체적이어야 한다고 말합니다. 학교에서 배우는 교과는 아이들이 당장 부딪히는 현실적 문제 해결에 적용되어야 하며(아이들에게도 그 나이에 맞는 문제가 늘 존재합니다), 또한 성인이 되었을 때 필요한 다양한 능력을 기르는 데 도움이 되어야 합니다. 오늘날의 학교 교육은 어떻습니까? 어떤 이는 도덕 교육을 강조하고, 또 다른 이는 사회에 나가 필요한 능력을 가르쳐야 한다고 주장합니다. 그 결과 이성이 결핍된 감정적 존재, 혹은 감정이 결핍된 이성적 존재와 같은 극단적인 아이들이 늘어나고 있습니다. 그러나 인간은 감정과 이성을 함께 지닌 종합적인 존재입니다. 이제는 사회와 단절된 학교 교육이 아니라, 사회적 활동을 고려한 유기체적 교육이 필요한 때입니다.

My Thoughts:
John Dewey argues that the relationship between school and society should be organic. What children learn in school should be applicable to the real-life problems they face at their age—since every stage of life has its own challenges—and should also help them develop the diverse abilities they will need as adults. But what about today’s education? Some emphasize moral instruction, while others argue that schools should focus on teaching practical skills necessary after graduation. As a result, more and more children are growing up either as emotional beings lacking reason, or as rational beings deprived of emotion. Yet human beings are holistic in nature, embodying both emotion and reason. It is time to move beyond an education isolated from society and instead pursue an organic education that takes social life into account.
