Making Time for Learning as We Grow Older

As we grow older, time becomes increasingly difficult to manage.

When we are young, curiosity alone can inspire us to try new things. When something catches our interest, we read books, meet new people, and explore unfamiliar fields. It does not take much effort to imagine the possibilities that lie ahead.

But as time passes, our lives change. We take on responsibilities at work and at home, face financial obligations, and become more involved in the lives of others. Naturally, we have less time to devote entirely to learning something new.

At some point, we begin to rely more on the experiences and familiar methods we have accumulated than on the possibility of discovering something different. Past experience can become a source of wisdom that sustains us. Yet it can also become an obstacle to accepting new ideas.

So what should we do as we grow older?

A Life That Does Not Remain Bound by Experience

Throughout our lives, we accumulate countless experiences. They become the foundation of our judgment and help us navigate difficult situations.

However, having more experience does not necessarily mean having a broader perspective.

In fact, when we treat our own experiences as the only standard, it can become difficult to accept new ideas. We may assume that methods that worked in the past will remain effective today, or judge different opinions as simply wrong.

Learning is the process of stepping back from such familiarity.

Learning is not limited to acquiring new knowledge. It also means questioning what we have always taken for granted and reconsidering our own judgments through the experiences of others.

We grow through experience, but when we reflect on those experiences, we can develop a deeper kind of wisdom.

The Responsibilities of Life and Time for Learning

Getting married, building a family, and raising children all demand considerable time and energy.

There are days when simply maintaining our daily routines and attending to our family’s needs is enough to keep us busy. Learning something new or setting aside time to organize our thoughts can easily fall to the bottom of our priorities.

Yet I believe that learning becomes even more important during these stages of life.

Taking responsibility for a family requires more than practical skills. It also requires the wisdom to understand other people. As our children grow, parents must continue learning alongside them. In our relationships with our spouses, we must also make an effort to understand one another.

The same applies to our lives in society. We build relationships with people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives. To avoid judging the world solely through our own assumptions, we must continue learning and reflecting.

Learning is not an activity that allows us to escape from reality. Rather, it helps us understand reality more deeply and fulfill our responsibilities more thoughtfully.

Renewing Ourselves with New Growth

I do not believe that growing older is simply a process of losing new possibilities.

As time passes, we certainly lose some things. At the same time, however, we discover meanings in life that we could not have understood before. We begin to appreciate the weight of responsibility and relationships in ways that were once unfamiliar to us. We also start looking at issues differently, including things we previously paid little attention to.

What matters is that we do not remain confined to who we used to be.

I believe learning allows us to renew ourselves with new growth. This does not mean completely abandoning the past. It means adding new ideas and perspectives to the experiences we have already accumulated.

We do not need elaborate plans to begin. We can start by reading a little every day, studying a subject that interests us, or listening to the stories of others. What matters is the willingness to make time for learning.

Our lives do not come to a standstill simply because we have grown older. As long as there is time ahead of us, we can continue to learn and change.

Learning is not a privilege reserved for the young. Those who have accumulated life experience have a responsibility to reinterpret that experience and develop it into deeper wisdom.
