Why Are Cherry Blossoms Beautiful?
When I think of Tokyo in March, I imagine streets covered with falling cherry blossoms. Walking beneath petals drifting down like pink snow, even an ordinary day can feel beautiful, almost like a scene from a movie.
Why is that?
Perhaps cherry blossoms are beautiful not simply because of their color or shape, but because they bloom so magnificently and then disappear so quickly. Their brief existence makes the moment feel even more precious.
Perhaps beauty contains, in some way, an awareness of things passing away.
Raising children can be incredibly difficult. There are days when they cry, nights when we barely sleep, and moments when we have to give up things we would rather be doing.
And yet, because we love our children, those difficulties do not end simply as difficulties.
There are moments when spending time with our children is exhausting, yet precious. Moments when we are tired, yet still find ourselves smiling.
I think one reason for this is our ability to recognize beauty.
Beauty does not remove the difficulties of reality. But it changes the way we look at that reality. It allows us to notice a small smile in the middle of a difficult day and reminds us that even the most ordinary moments of our lives will never come again in exactly the same way.
Somehow, I have become the father of two children.
I watch my first child making us laugh and see my second child growing a little more every day. Moments that I once regarded simply as part of our daily routine now feel different to me.
The days when my children laugh, run around, and call for their father will eventually pass.
Just like the cherry blossoms of spring.
That is why the time I spend with my children has begun to feel so beautiful.
Because someday, this moment will be gone, and I will never be able to see them exactly as they are today again.
Perhaps beauty is the ability to love something even while knowing that it will eventually disappear.
Today, I look at another ordinary day with my children.
And I think:
This moment, too, is a season like the cherry blossoms—a moment that will never come again.
