성경에는 빵 일곱 개와 몇 마리의 물고기로 사천 명을 먹이신 기적이 기록되어 있습니다. 놀라운 것은 그 기적 직후의 장면입니다. 제자들은 예수님의 놀라운 능력을 직접 경험했음에도 불구하고, 자신들이 빵을 가져오지 않은 것을 두고 서로 걱정하며 이야기하고 있었습니다.
앞뒤의 이야기를 함께 읽어 보면 이 장면은 참으로 이상하게 느껴집니다. 조금 전까지 예수님께서 적은 양의 음식으로 수천 명을 먹이시는 기적을 눈앞에서 본 사람들이, 이제는 자신들의 한 끼 식사를 걱정하고 있기 때문입니다. 처음 이 말씀을 읽었을 때 저는 제자들의 모습을 보며 답답함을 느꼈습니다.
하지만 묵상을 이어 가다 보니, 그 어리석은 모습이 제 안에도 있다는 사실을 발견하게 되었습니다. 하나님께서 분명히 역사하셨던 순간들을 경험했음에도 새로운 문제가 찾아오면, 저는 또다시 처음부터 믿음이 없는 사람처럼 걱정하고 두려워하지 않았는지 돌아보게 되었습니다.
하나님을 믿는 사람이라면 살아가는 동안 한 번쯤은 하나님의 은혜를 분명히 경험하는 순간이 있습니다. 어떤 사람에게는 기도의 응답이었고, 어떤 사람에게는 어려운 환경 속에서 경험한 하나님의 인도하심이었을 것입니다. 그 경험은 우리의 믿음을 자라게 하고, 절망 가운데 다시 일어설 용기를 줍니다.
그러나 성경이 우리에게 가르쳐 주는 것은 단순히 ‘기적을 경험했다’는 사실이 아닙니다. 더 중요한 것은 기적을 행하신 하나님은 변하지 않으신다는 사실입니다.
제자들이 잊어버린 것은 기적 자체가 아니라, 그 기적을 행하신 예수님이 누구신가였습니다.
우리도 마찬가지입니다. 문제는 새로운 상황이 찾아오는 것이 아니라, 새로운 상황 앞에서 어제 나를 붙드셨던 하나님을 잊어버리는 데 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜는 상황에 따라 달라지지 않습니다.
어제의 하나님과 오늘의 하나님은 동일하십니다. 나를 인도하셨던 하나님께서 오늘도 나와 함께하시며, 내일도 변함없이 신실하신 하나님으로 계십니다. 문제의 모습은 달라질 수 있지만, 하나님의 성품은 변하지 않습니다.
오늘 우리 앞에는 진로, 취업, 결혼, 건강, 경제적인 어려움과 같은 다양한 문제가 놓여 있을지 모릅니다. 그럴 때 새로운 해결책만 찾기보다, 하나님께서 지금까지 우리를 어떻게 인도하셨는지를 먼저 기억해 보는 것은 어떨까요?
믿음은 새로운 하나님을 찾는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 나를 붙드셨던 동일하신 하나님을 다시 기억하는 것입니다. 그 기억은 오늘을 살아갈 용기가 되고, 내일을 향한 소망이 됩니다.
God’s Grace Never Changes
The Bible records the miracle in which Jesus fed four thousand people with seven loaves of bread and a few small fish. What is remarkable, however, is what happened immediately afterward. Despite witnessing this incredible miracle with their own eyes, the disciples began worrying among themselves because they had forgotten to bring bread.
When we read the passages together, their conversation seems almost strange. Just moments earlier, they had seen Jesus feed thousands with almost nothing, yet they were now anxious about their own next meal.
When I first read this passage, I found myself frustrated with the disciples. But as I continued to reflect on it, I realized that the same weakness exists within me. Although I have experienced God’s faithfulness in my own life, whenever a new problem arises, I often find myself worrying as if I had never trusted Him before.
Anyone who has walked with God long enough has likely experienced His grace at least once in a way they cannot deny. For some, it was an answered prayer. For others, it was God’s guidance through a difficult season. Those moments strengthen our faith and give us the courage to stand again when life becomes overwhelming.
Yet Scripture teaches us something deeper than simply remembering the miracle itself. What truly matters is remembering the God who performed the miracle.
The disciples did not merely forget what Jesus had done—they forgot who Jesus was.
The same is true for us. The greatest challenge is not that new problems appear, but that we forget the God who faithfully carried us through yesterday’s struggles.
God’s grace does not change with our circumstances.
The God who led us yesterday is the same God who walks with us today and will remain faithful tomorrow. Our situations may change, but His character never does.
Today we may face questions about our careers, employment, marriage, health, finances, or countless other uncertainties. When those moments come, perhaps our first response should not be searching for a new solution, but remembering how God has already led us throughout our lives.
Faith is not about discovering a new God. It is about remembering the same faithful God who has already been holding us all along. That remembrance gives us strength for today and hope for tomorrow.
