경상북도 영주시 안정면사무소 옆에는 작은 교회 하나가 있습니다. 오랜 역사를 지닌 안정교회는 규모는 작지만, 지역사회 안에서 하나님의 복음을 몸으로 실천해 온 단단한 공동체입니다.
기회가 되어 새벽기도에 참석하게 되었습니다. 예배는 넓은 본당이 아니라, 겨울밤의 냉기를 따뜻하게 녹여주는 소회당에서 시작되었습니다. 시간이 되자 강대상 앞에서 엎드려 기도하고 계시던 담임목사님이 조용히 일어나, 아직 잠기운이 남아 있는 우리에게 하나님의 말씀을 전하십니다.
말씀은 룻기 1장이었습니다. 남편을 잃은 룻이 시어머니 나오미를 따라 남편의 고향으로 돌아가기로 결단하는 장면입니다. 목사님은 룻의 고백을 천천히 읽어 내려가셨습니다.
“룻이 가로되 나로 어머니를 떠나며 어머니를 따르지 말고 돌아가라 강권하지 마옵소서 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 유숙하시는 곳에서 나도 유숙하겠나이다 어머니의 백성이 나의 백성이 되고 어머니의 하나님이 나의 하나님이 되시리니” (룻기 1:16)
목사님은 이 말씀이 단순한 가족애의 표현이 아니라, 하나님의 동행을 선택하는 결단임을 짚어 주셨습니다. 룻은 불확실한 미래 앞에서 계산하지 않고, 하나님이 계신 자리로 발걸음을 옮겼습니다. 그 선택이 바로 그리스도인이 삶의 수많은 갈림길 앞에서 내려야 할 결단의 본이라고 전하셨습니다.
시골 교회는 도시의 교회와 다르게, 말보다 행동이 더 중요해지는 공간입니다. 함께 어울리고, 함께 먹고, 함께 시간을 보내며, 자연스럽게 서로의 깊은 삶까지 들여다보게 됩니다. 그래서 목회자는 설교자로만이 아니라, 삶으로 말씀을 보여주는 존재가 됩니다. 안정교회의 목사님에게서 그런 일치된 삶의 인상을 받았습니다. 말과 삶이 분리되지 않은 목회, 그 자체가 설교처럼 느껴졌습니다.
신중하면서도 명확한 하나님의 말씀이 차가운 겨울 새벽 공기 속에 울려 퍼졌고, 그 말씀은 제 안에 새로운 결단을 남겼습니다. 예배를 마치고 오랜만에 아버지와 함께 목욕탕에 다녀왔습니다. 다음에는 목사님과도 함께 가고 싶다는 생각이 문득 들었습니다. 그만큼 가까이에서 삶을 나누는 신앙 공동체의 모습이 자연스럽게 그려졌기 때문일 것입니다.
안정교회를 위해 기도합니다. 이 작은 교회가 앞으로도 지역 속에서 묵묵히 하나님의 복음을 살아내는 공동체로 서 있기를 소망합니다.
In Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, next to the Anjeong-myeon office, there is a small church. Anjeong Church, with its long history, is a small yet strong community that lives out the gospel of God in the local area.
I had the opportunity to attend an early morning prayer service. The service began not in the main sanctuary, but in a small chapel that gently warmed the cold winter night. When the time came, the senior pastor, who had been kneeling in prayer before the pulpit, quietly stood up and delivered God’s Word to us, still half-awake from sleep.
The Scripture reading was from Ruth chapter 1. Ruth, despite the death of her husband, chooses to follow her mother-in-law back to her husband’s hometown. The pastor slowly read her confession:
“But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.’” (Ruth 1:16)
The pastor explained that this was not merely an expression of familial loyalty, but a decision to walk with God. Ruth did not calculate the uncertainty of her future; instead, she chose the place where God was. Through her choice, we were shown the kind of decision a Christian must make when standing before the many crossroads of life.
A rural church often faces situations where actions speak louder than words, more so than in urban church communities. People live closely together—sharing meals, joys, and sorrows—and often come to know the deeper parts of one another’s lives. In such a setting, pastors convey God’s Word not only through sermons but through the way they live as Christians. Observing the pastor of Anjeong Church, I had the strong impression that such a life was being faithfully lived out.
Careful and clear, God’s Word echoed through the cold winter dawn. It led me to make new resolutions. After the service, I went to a public bath with my father for the first time in a long while. On the way, I found myself thinking that I would like to go together with the pastor next time as well. It felt natural, as if that were the kind of faith community being formed—one that shares life closely.
I pray for Anjeong Church. May this small church continue to stand as a community that quietly and faithfully lives out the gospel of God within its local community.
