메리 크리스마스. 문득 이런 질문을 할 때가 있습니다. 만약 예수님이 이 땅에 오시지 않았다면, 나는 어떤 삶을 살고 있었을까.
‘만약’이라는 가정법은 인간 사회에서만 존재하는 언어적 문법이라고 합니다. 그래서 이런 질문은 지혜로워 보이지만, 사실 누구도 대답할 수 없는 어리석은 물음일지도 모릅니다. 역사와 존재는 가정 위에 서 있지 않기 때문입니다.
그렇습니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 사건은 어떤 우연한 인과관계의 결과도, 인간을 향한 즉흥적인 베풂도 아니었습니다. 알파와 오메가이신 하나님께서 태초부터 품으신 계획 안에 포함된 사건이었습니다. 그렇기에 우리에게 더 의미 있는 질문은 “왜 오셨는가”가 아니라, “그 오심의 내용은 무엇인가”일 것입니다.
“보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그 이름은 임마누엘이라 하리라 하셨으니 이를 번역한즉 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다 함이라.” (마태복음 1:23)
아담과 하와의 원죄 이후 ‘죽음’을 피할 수 없게 된 인간에게 ‘생명’을 주시기 위한 하나님의 계획, 그것이 성탄의 본질입니다. 이 사실은 누군가에게는 믿음으로 받아들여지고, 누군가에게는 불신으로 거부됩니다. 믿지 않는 이들에게는 아무 의미 없는 이야기처럼 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이 사건은 어떤 의미를 가질 수 있을까요.
인간은 오랜 시간 동안 경험과 이성을 통해 세계를 이해해 왔습니다. 탄생과 죽음, 우주와 지구 같은 물리적 현상들은 우리에게 감각적인 사실로 다가오며, 의식적이든 무의식적이든 경외심을 불러일으킵니다. 그리고 그 경외는 자연스럽게 신의 존재를 인식하게 만듭니다. 이 이해는 한계를 가진 인간에게 설명할 수 없는 평안을 줍니다.
인간 사회는 함께 만들어가는 공동체이지만, 그 ‘함께’를 가능하게 하는 것은 각자가 홀로 서 있는 시간들입니다. 누구에게나 혼자 마주하는 시간이 있고, 그 시간 속에서 우리는 염세적인 사고에 빠지기도 합니다. 일상 속에서 이런 시간은 반드시 존재하며, 그 시간을 평안으로 다스리지 못한다면 그 불안은 개인을 넘어 사회 전체로 확산됩니다.
그렇다면 이런 존재적 안정과 평안을 위해 우리는 신앙을 가져야 하는 것일까요. 그렇지 않습니다. 만약 그렇게 느껴졌다면, 위의 모든 논리를 잊어도 좋습니다. 제가 전하고 싶은 것은 단 하나입니다. 크리스마스가 기독교인만의 기쁨이 아니라, 전 세계 사람들이 함께 기뻐하는 날이라는 사실입니다. 그렇다면 한 번쯤은 이런 질문을 던져보아도 좋지 않을까요. 우리는 왜 이 날을 기뻐하는가.

Merry Christmas — My Reflections on Christmas
Merry Christmas. At times, a question suddenly comes to mind: If Jesus had not come into this world, what kind of life would I be living?
The conditional phrase “if” is said to be a form of grammar that exists only in human language. Questions like this may sound thoughtful, yet in truth they are impossible to answer. History and existence do not rest upon hypotheses.
The coming of Jesus was neither an unfortunate accident of causality nor a spontaneous act of generosity. It was an event embedded in the eternal plan of God, who is the Alpha and the Omega. Therefore, the more meaningful question for us is not “What if He had not come?” but rather, “What does His coming mean?”
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which means, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)
The birth of Christ was God’s plan to give life to humanity that had inherited death through the original sin of Adam and Eve. Some respond to this truth with faith; others with disbelief. To those who do not believe, it may feel like a fact without meaning. And yet, even so, what significance might it hold?
Throughout history, human beings have sought understanding through experience and reason. The physical realities we observe—birth, death, the universe, the earth—awaken in us a sense of awe, whether consciously or unconsciously. This awe naturally leads us to recognize the existence of God. Such recognition grants a profound peace to finite beings who cannot fully comprehend the infinite.
Human society is built together, yet in order to build it, each individual must also endure times of standing alone. In those solitary moments, people often fall into pessimistic thought. Such moments inevitably exist in everyday life, and if they are not held in peace, they generate anxiety—not only within individuals, but throughout society itself.
One might then ask: Do we need faith simply because it offers existential comfort? Not at all. If that is how this reflection is understood, then all of the reasoning above may be forgotten. What I hope instead is simply this: Christmas is not a joy reserved only for Christians. It is a day that brings joy to people all around the world. And so, perhaps once, it is worth asking—why do we rejoice on this day?
