우리는 흔히 무역을 ‘국가 간 상품 교환’이라 생각합니다. 그러나 애덤 스미스가 말한 무역의 시작은 그렇게 단순하지 않았습니다. 무역의 본질은 ‘내게 남는 것을 네게 나누고, 너도 네 남는 것을 내게 주는 것’, 다시 말해 잉여의 교환이었습니다.
하지만 지금은 어떤가요? 우리는 ‘무역을 위해’ 상품을 만들고, ‘팔기 위해’ 문화를 포장합니다. 그 과정에서 욕망은 설계되고, 소비는 조작되며, 국경을 넘나드는 물건들마저 이해보다 착각을 낳습니다.
그래서 저는 거꾸로 가보기로 했습니다. 물건을 통해 ‘그 나라의 생활’을, ‘그 사람들의 시간’을, ‘그 손의 기억’을 이해해보는 것. 저는 “이해를 위한 무역”, “잉여의 교환에서 시작된 진짜 문화 교류”를 실천하는 작은 가게를 만들고자 합니다.
제가 소개할 상품은 많지 않습니다. 하지만 그 물건 하나하나에, 저는 누군가의 마음과 시간과 방식이 담겼다고 믿습니다.
이곳은 단순한 쇼핑몰이 아닙니다. 나라와 나라 사이에 놓인 작은 다리, 혹은 물건이라는 언어로 이루어진 작은 대화방 같은 곳이 되었으면 합니다.
Returning to the Origin of Trade
We often think of trade as the exchange of goods between nations. But as Adam Smith once described, the true beginning of trade lies elsewhere. Trade began not as mass production or profit strategy, but as the exchange of surplus— giving what one had in excess, and receiving what one lacked.
But look around us today.We no longer trade our surplus—we manufacture desire. We produce for the sake of selling, package culture for marketability, and in the process, turn consumption into illusion rather than understanding.
So I decided to go the other way. To create a small shop, one that introduces items not because they sell well, but because they tell a story— a way of life, a sense of time, a memory held in someone’s hands.
This is not just a shopping site. It’s a quiet experiment in “trade for understanding.” An attempt to recover the essence of exchange. Each item I introduce may be small, but it carries with it a piece of a people, a culture, and a nation.
If trade has strayed far from its roots,
perhaps it’s time to return.
