교육은 가정에서 시작됩니다. 인간의 본성 중 하나인 ‘모방’은 생존에 필요한 능력을 자연스럽게 익히는 데 매우 효과적인 학습 방식입니다. 이러한 이유로 아이들이 능력을 키워가는 데 있어 가정은 사회의 최소 단위로서 매우 중요한 역할을 담당합니다. 물론 여기서 말하는 ‘가정’은 반드시 혈연으로 이루어진 가족일 필요는 없으며, 아이와 생활을 함께하며 모범을 보일 수 있는 모든 공동체를 포함합니다.
하지만 오늘날 대한민국의 교육은 가정과 분리된 전문 기관에서 출발하는 경우가 많습니다. 미성숙한 아이들을 유능한 지식인이 모여 있는 조직에 맡기고, 문자적 지식의 습득에만 집중하는 사회 분위기는 교육에 대한 왜곡된 열정을 부추깁니다. 전문 기관에 의존하는 교육 방식은 경제적 부담을 수반하며, 이는 빈부격차에 따른 교육 기회의 불균형을 야기하고, 결국 사회적 질투와 불신을 낳습니다. 그 결과, 자본주의에 대한 왜곡된 비판이 등장하기도 합니다.
더 큰 문제는 이러한 사회 분위기 속에서 부모들이 자신의 책임을 이웃이나 국가, 사회에 전가하고 있다는 점입니다. 이는 사회 전체의 교육 비용을 증가시키는 원인이 되며, 부모 세대의 잘못된 교육관이 사회적 관습으로 자리 잡아 교육 환경에 심각한 위험을 초래하고 있습니다. 이제는 아이들의 교육 방법을 논하기에 앞서, 부모부터 교육을 받아야 하는 시대가 된 것입니다.
미국의 교육철학자 존 듀이는 교육의 중심을 ‘생활’에 두고, 그 핵심에 가정의 역할이 있다고 강조했습니다. 결국 교육의 본질은 개인의 능력을 향상시키는 동시에 사회 속에서 건강한 삶을 살아가기 위한 준비 과정입니다.
오늘날 대한민국은 출산율 저하 문제를 해결하기 위해 다양한 정책을 입안하고 있지만, 그보다 먼저 재검토되어야 할 것은 현재의 교육 방향입니다. 가정의 중요성을 되새기고, 부모와 아이가 함께 성장할 수 있는 교육 환경을 조성하는 정책이야말로 근본적인 출산율 회복의 열쇠가 될 수 있습니다. 교육이 가정으로부터 출발할 때, 비로소 건강한 사회와 미래 세대가 자라날 수 있을 것입니다.
Education Begins at Home
Education begins at home. One of the essential traits of human nature is imitation, which serves as an effective and natural method for learning the skills necessary for survival. For this reason, the home—broadly understood as the environment where a child is nurtured, not necessarily limited to a traditional family—plays a vital role as the fundamental unit of society in a child’s development.
However, in contemporary South Korea, education often begins in specialized institutions, separated from the home. Entrusting immature children to highly educated professionals and focusing solely on the acquisition of academic knowledge has created a distorted culture of educational fervor. Relying heavily on professional institutions also incurs significant costs, deepening the gap in educational opportunities between social classes. This, in turn, fosters jealousy among citizens and fuels criticism of capitalism based on distorted perceptions.
Worse yet, some parents shift the blame for their own educational shortcomings onto neighbors, the government, or society at large, increasing the overall social cost of education. The misguided educational values of parents have become embedded in social norms, posing a serious threat to the educational environment. We now face a situation where parents themselves need to be educated before we even begin to discuss how to educate children.
American educational philosopher John Dewey emphasized that the essence of education lies in “life” and placed great importance on the role of the home. The ultimate goal of education, after all, is not just individual competence, but the ability to live meaningfully and responsibly within society.
South Korea is currently introducing a slew of policies aimed at increasing the birth rate. However, before focusing on population growth, we must first reevaluate our approach to education. Policies that highlight the importance of the home and encourage families to take an active role in child-rearing would offer a more sustainable solution. When education is once again rooted in the home, we may naturally see a revival in both family life and societal well-being.
