자신과 공동체를 지키는 마음은 아주 자연스러운 감정 중 하나입니다. 감정이라고 표현하지만, 무언가를 지키는 과정은 가능한 한 이성적 판단력을 가지고 진행해야 하는 일입니다. 그렇다면 개인의 일상에 지대한 영향을 주는 정치적 리더를 선출하는 과정도 위와 동일한 과정을 거쳐야 하는 것이 당연하겠죠.

미국도, 일본도, 한국도 현대 민주주의 국가들의 정치적 리더가 선출되는 과정을 보면 연예인의 인기투표와의 차이점을 눈치채기 어려울 정도로 인물의 이미지로만 평가됩니다. 후보자들의 발언은 뜬구름 잡는 추상적이고 현실과 동떨어진 정책들로 사람들의 마음을 사로잡습니다.

하지만 이미지는 실체를 알 수 없을 뿐더러, 이성적 판단을 할 수 있는 재료가 부재합니다. 해결할 수 없고 비본질적인 사회적 문제들을 마구잡이로 언급해 복잡해 보이도록 하면서 이미지만 만든 채 사람들의 감정에 호소합니다. 진짜 문제와 해결 방안은 멀리 두고, 시민들의 이성적 판단력은 마비되어 갑니다. 왜냐하면 인간 행동의 동기는 감성적인 요소와 더 친밀하기 때문이죠.

우리의 감성을 더 세련되고 올바른 현상에 반응하도록 생활습관을 바꿀 필요가 있습니다. 정치인들의 이미지 마케팅을 저지할 수 있는 힘은 시민들에게 있습니다. 우리는 올바른 ‘미적 판단’을 할 수 있도록 마음을 수양해야 합니다. 먼저는 자신의 삶과 가까운 공동체를 지키고 싶은 순수한 마음이 선행되고 회복되어야 합니다.

더 이상 타인의 변화를 기다리지 맙시다. 자신이 바뀌면 타인이 달리 보이기 시작합니다.

Citizen or Fan?

The desire to protect oneself and the community is one of the most natural emotions. Though it is described as an emotion, the process of protecting something should be conducted with rational judgment as much as possible. In that case, it is only natural that the process of electing a political leader, who greatly influences our daily lives, should follow the same procedure.

In countries like the U.S., Japan, and Korea, it’s hard to distinguish the process of electing political leaders in modern democracies from celebrity popularity contests, as candidates are judged almost solely on their image. Their speeches are abstract, vague, and disconnected from reality, yet they captivate people’s hearts.

However, an image does not reveal the substance, nor does it provide the material for rational judgment. They randomly mention unsolvable and non-essential societal problems, making everything seem more complicated while appealing to emotions. Meanwhile, real issues and solutions are left untouched, and citizens’ rational judgment is dulled because human behavior is more closely tied to emotional factors.

We need to change our habits so that our emotions can respond to more refined and correct phenomena. The power to prevent politicians from relying solely on image marketing lies with the citizens. We must cultivate our minds to make the right ‘aesthetic judgments.’ First and foremost, we need to restore the pure desire to protect the community close to our own lives.

Let’s stop waiting for others to change. When you change, others will start to look different.
