에드먼드 버크는 단순한 민족주의 감정이 아니라, 신중한 정치적 고려와 실용적 외교 판단을 중시했습니다. 그는 당시 자국의 식민지였던 미국의 독립 혁명에 대해 일정 부분 이해를 표하면서도, 프랑스 혁명의 파괴적 성격에 대해서는 단호히 반대했습니다. 그 판단의 기준은 도덕성과 이성, 그리고 정치 질서에 대한 책임이었습니다.
오늘날의 한일 관계 역시, 당당하고 떳떳한 자세로 미래를 향해 나아가야 할 시점입니다. 국민의 감정에 귀 기울이는 것은 정치의 기본이지만, 그에 휘둘리기보다는 국민을 설득하고 함께 고민해 나가는 자세가 더욱 중요합니다.
Reason, Not Emotion: Burke’s Wisdom for Korea-Japan Relations
The dilemma of Korea–Japan relations stems from the cowardice of past politicians. They prioritized only their own interests and those of their loyal supporters. Instead of seriously contemplating the future of Korean society, they remained fixated on the past.
Edmund Burke did not rely on blind nationalism.
He valued prudent political judgment and practical diplomacy grounded in moral and rational principles. He showed understanding toward the American Revolution, despite it being a rebellion against his own country, Britain.
At the same time, he strongly opposed the French Revolution, not out of contradiction, but because he believed in political responsibility, moral order, and continuity.
Korea–Japan relations today must also move forward with dignity and purpose. While it is essential to listen to the emotions of the people, it is even more crucial to lead with reason—to persuade rather than pander. It is time for politics not just to reflect anger, but to restore trust and articulate a shared future.
