Without its many free-spirited and innovative individuals, Korea could not have achieved its present prosperity. The civic society shaped by these individuals—who transformed their lives and communities through personal experience and creativity—holds greater legitimacy than the institutions of a privileged few.
We must shift our focus away from blind faith in utopian ideals, and instead recognize the ordinary people who creatively solved problems under difficult circumstances. Power, in any era, has brought temporary benefit, but when corrupted, it has sown harm that outweighed those benefits. Without the quiet efforts of those who preserved freedom, today’s Korea would not exist.
It is time to abandon our blind trust in government authority. Instead, we must propose practical and creative solutions for communities with greater freedom. Rising suicide rates, broken families, declining incomes—these personal and societal issues must be confronted with personal responsibility. We can no longer surrender our actual lives to impersonal ideas like “history,” “democracy,” or even “the church.” A legitimate government can only stand on the political foundation built and protected by free citizens within a vibrant civil society.
